Traditional Tank Water Heaters

I Rely on tank-style water heaters like Rheem and other popular brands available in electric, natural gas, and propane. The insulated tank holds water to heat and store the water until it’s needed.

Service or a Replacement?

  • The average home requires a water heater that holds either 30, 40, 50 or 75 gallons. Its average life cycle is 10 years. When your water heater starts showing its age, it could be time for a replacement.

  • Find the age of your water heater by looking up the manufacture and putting in the serial number. In California, where we have very hard water, a water conditioning system can help add to the life of the water heater as well as other fixtures and appliances.

  • Water heater warranties start at 6-year tank and parts and 1-year labor from the manufacturer. Longer warranties are available. No matter if you need repair or new water heater, call for more information.

Energy Efficient Tankless Water Heaters

There are many different brands of tankless style water heaters available. Let Pieper Plumbing help you find the best water heater based on your needs. Choose from electric, natural gas, or propane from manufacturers such as Navien, Noritz, Rheem, Rinnai, Bosch, A.O. Smith. Each system is energy efficient and installed by a professional.

Why install a tankless water heater?

  • More energy efficient than a tank style water heater

  • Takes up less space

  • Heats water on demand so virtually endless hot water

  • Life expectancy is 20+ years compared to 10 years from a tank

Things to consider:

  • Tankless water heaters are known for on-demand hot water. This does not mean immediate hot water when you turn on the tap. Hot water comes from the same location as the tank-style water heater. Adding a hot water recirculation system is the only way to speed up the delivery.

  • Tankless water heaters start heating hot water when the hot tap is turned on. It will continue to heat hot water until the tap is turned off.

  • Tankless hot water heaters are more expensive to install than a tank-style water heater. The gas pipe size, exhaust vent, water piping may all need to be reworked or changed which causes the price increase.

  • Remember a tankless water heater starts heating hot water when a hot tap is turned on, so if you have a single handle faucet and you are rinsing dishes or your hands, make sure you really want hot or warm water. Kicking the unit on and off unnecessarily will reduce the energy efficiency of the unit.

  • A water conditioning system should be installed along with the tankless water heater to help prolong the life of the unit.

  • A tankless water heater will need to be flushed once a year to prevent scale build up in the heat exchanger.

Tankless Water Heater Recommendations

A homeowner will find tankless water heaters in the big box stores, but I HIGHLY recommend you contact a licensed plumber for your tankless water heater installation.
The gas meter size and gas piping size in the home must be recalculated to ensure the unit will work properly and efficiently. Your standard tank-style water heater will use 30,000 to 50,000 BTUs, but your new tankless unit will use 3 to 4 times that amount. So, if you are using multiple appliances at once, chances are something will not work correctly.
The exhaust for a tankless unit cannot use the same galvanized vent pipe a tank-style uses. Call today for a free in-home consultation to see if tankless is for you.
